History of F. Dickinson's Shoe Shop

The business started at the end of the 19th century as a shoe shop and a repairer. The boots, which were made on the premises used to sit outside the shop (click on picture of King Street, opposite, you can see the giant boot outside the shop on the left hand side of the picture).

We are a traditional family business with the aim of offering excellent quality footwear, comfortable casual shoes, elegant court shoes for dressier events and high quality men's shoes for all occasions.

We have a good selection of well known brands as well as excellent shoes from throughout Europe. Our philosphy is to give each customer personal, friendly service.

Dickinson's Giant Boot

These boots were probably made from locally tanned hides at Ulverston's Randal and Porters Low Mill tannery, who were specialists in bark tanned leathers.

The tannery was down by the local stream, as the usage of water was essential to the process

Today it would be difficult to tan in this traditional way due to the environmental problem of the disposal of waste effluent.

The materials used were oak, mimosa or quebracho vegetable materials. The tanning process of these hides would take up to eight weeks from start to finish, it took a real craftsman to mould these leathers into the shape of these boots, as Fred Dickinson's cousin did by hand on his premises.

We believe these boots are unique.

Giant Boot Featured on Antiques Roadshow

Michael Aspel was quite amazed when we took the giant boot to the Antiques Roadshow when they visited Ulverston, here he is pictured with the boot. The boot is approximately a men's size 39 !!!
